An individual plan
Treatment depends on acne severity, skin type, previous medicines and pregnancy status. A clinician can select suitable topical or oral medicines.
Topical options
Benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids and azelaic acid are treatment options. Dryness and irritation can occur; discuss how to use treatment with your clinician.
Oral treatment and monitoring
Moderate or severe acne may require oral treatment. Antibiotics should not be used alone. Oral isotretinoin requires specialist assessment and monitoring.
Pregnancy safety
Do not use topical retinoids or oral isotretinoin during pregnancy. Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy before starting treatment.
Realistic expectations
Improvement takes time. Avoid repeatedly changing medicines yourself and attend follow-up to review progress and side effects.
